Kaiser prevents damaged cars with 35,000 sf of new traffic coating

Kaiser Vallejo

Kaiser Vallejo contacted us to install 35,000 square feet of urethane traffic coating on the top level of the employee parking structure. We rolled up our sleeves, and in just 2 short weeks, they had a new parking structure with zero project delays.

Working with a company the size of Kaiser is a big project. In addition to the technical expertise needed, there are a lot of moving parts that require excellent communication with the client and project management with the team. From safety to scheduling, a project of this size is no small feat, but our experienced team of professionals was up to the task!

Why invest in your parking structure? In addition to looking nice, multistory parking structures pose a safety risk to the cars below if not kept up to code. Usually the top floors get coated because water goes through a leaking top floor and can go through the concrete, causing the reinforcing steel in the slab to corrode and causing concrete spalling, weakening the structure. In addition, the water picks up chlorides and minerals as it moves through the concrete and can drip down below on the cars, causing paint damage. As you can imagine, you definitely don’t want this to happen as a business owner.

Something we pride ourselves on at UW is having a team of expertly trained installers. When it comes to traffic coating jobs, the installation is quite technical, and not everyone can do it (or at least do it right because it’s a specialty). You have to follow each step carefully, from mixing the material to applying it at the right temperature. We need to put together a team where everyone does their part and is an expert in their area. If it isn’t done perfectly, you have to start over, which causes costly delays.

Materials are expensive, and usually clients are on a tight timeline. When we’re doing the work, cars can’t park there, so it’s imperative to do it right for the client.

What We Did

  • Installed 35,000 square feet of urethane traffic coating

  • Full-service project management with an experienced team

  • Phasing to accommodate active job sites

  • Zoning and permits with the city

  • Ongoing prevention planning for a long-term client

Project Details

Using over 1500 gallons of urethane coating and nearly 200 bags of sand, we needed to bring the materials to the project site quickly with as little disruption as possible since the jobsite was still serving hospital clients and staff. In order to do this, we had to coordinate schedules and rent machines. As a result, we were able to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Using ultra-high-pressure water blast removal, we ripped up the old coating and prepared the surface for the new coating. With a team of expertly trained installers, each person was able to do their job flawlessly. Work was performed in shifts, almost around the clock, to install the entire system with as little downtime for the hospital staff as possible. All right-angle transition joints were caulked with urethane sealant to provide a watertight seal and an easy transition for the new coating. Expansion joints bisecting the parking deck were recaulked. Once the new coating was installed, new parking bumpers and a new striping and traffic marking system were applied.
